Betsy McMahonBetsy’s Y Story

Betsy McMahon’s journey with the Y began many years ago when she sought a volunteer opportunity at the Merrimack branch as a Welcome Center Greeter. Having been involved with Opportunity Networks and other social service agencies that partner with the Y, Betsy was already familiar with the facility and its community. Around 2005, she became the first volunteer greeter at the Merrimack Y—a milestone that thrilled her parents. “We were looking for things for Betsy to do and ways for her to be involved in the community,” her dad, Tim, shared.

For years, Betsy and her former aide became familiar faces at the Merrimack Y, welcoming members as they arrived and wishing them well as they left. After some time, Betsy approached Y staff about transitioning into a paid position so she could qualify for certain health benefits outside the Y. With the support of her caregiver, she successfully secured her former volunteer role as a paid employee. “It was a small thing for the Y but a huge thing for us,” Tim expressed.

Betsy takes her job at the Welcome Center seriously and enjoys the daily interactions with members. “I love meeting people when they come in, being social, chatting with them, and helping them out,” she said. Over the years, she has built meaningful connections with members. “There’s a whole bunch of people who stop and chat with Betsy,” Tim added.

She also enjoys learning people’s names and introducing herself. “I like getting my paycheck, taking it to the bank, buying lottery tickets, and putting the rest into my bank account,” she said with a smile.

Beyond her work, Betsy enjoys seeing friends from Opportunity Networks and The PLUS Company when they visit the Y. She also participates in Personal Training with Tyler in Merrimack, a commitment she has maintained for several years. “I like walking on the treadmill, using the indoor track, lifting dumbbells, working with battle ropes and the medicine ball, doing yoga, and shooting baskets,” she said.

Her workouts have had a positive impact on her health. “Personal Training helps me lose weight, strengthens my muscles, and benefits my whole body,” Betsy explained. Her dad echoed her enthusiasm, adding, “Tyler is a Y star. I always know she’s in great hands with him.”

Betsy’s journey—from volunteer to employee—has been a rewarding experience, not just for her but for the Y community. In addition to earning money and staying engaged, she has built lasting relationships with members and staff. “I like my co-workers, and I really enjoy being part of the team,” she shared.

Her dad also reflected on the broader impact of her employment. “Having Betsy in this role has likely changed the perspective of many Y members and staff in a positive way when it comes to people with special needs. We’re very grateful to the Y.”
