YMCA of Greater Nashua Celebrates Hunger Action Month

September is Hunger Action Month. In New Hampshire, nearly 1 in 11 residents experience food insecurity. When children are hungry, they can’t focus on their schoolwork and are vulnerable to poor health and stunted development.

That’s why the YMCA of Greater Nashua is working to ensure families and children across our community have consistent access to healthy meals and essential items. Since launching its food distribution program in December 2024, the YMCA has expanded its support with a “to-go” shelf at the Westwood Park branch, as well as full food pantries in both the Nashua and Merrimack branches.

Most supplies are donated through a partnership with the United Way of Greater Nashua, including non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products. The Y has also received generous support in the form of gift cards and anonymous donations of essential goods, allowing the program to grow and respond to urgent needs.

In addition, through annual fall and winter food drives tied to membership join promotions, the YMCA and its new and current members donate hundreds of pounds of food to support the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter. These efforts further strengthen the Y’s commitment to addressing food insecurity across the Greater Nashua community.

The YMCA of Greater Nashua is proud to celebrate its YMCA Anti-Hunger All Stars this month, shining a spotlight on the staff, volunteers, community partners and donors who make this work possible. Their dedication helps ensure children and families across Greater Nashua have the resources they need to thrive.

“During Hunger Action Month, we’re reminded that food insecurity is an unfortunate circumstance that many people in our community face each and every day,” said Lynne Boyer, Executive Director of Community Impact at the YMCA of Greater Nashua. “Through our food distribution program, our branches’ pantries, seasonal food drives, and the dedication of our staff, volunteers, donors and partners, we are committed to ensuring that every child and family in Greater Nashua has access to healthy food and essential resources all year long.”
