YMCA Encourages Families to Embrace Outdoor Play and Heart Health Before Summer Ends

The YMCA of Greater Nashua is encouraging families to make the most of the final weeks of summer by joining in the celebration of National Play Outside Day on Saturday, August 2. As families gear up for back-to-school season, the Y invites the community to slow down, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy the last of summer’s outdoor adventures.

Whether it’s one more swim in the lake, one last cannonball in the pool, one last camp craft, or one more night around the fire, August is the time to soak up every sunny moment. From nature walks and swimming to messy crafts and funny camp songs, summer camp at the Y is where core memories are made. YMCA Summer Camps are still running, and families can register now for the final few sessions before the school year begins. With options ranging from traditional day camp to performing arts, STEM, teen leadership, and outdoor adventure programs, the Y continues to offer fun and meaningful experiences for every child. “August is the perfect time to play outside, reconnect, and capture those summer moments that matter most,” said Tiffany Joslin, Senior Program Director of Youth Development. “Whether it’s one more game of gaga ball, one more swim, or one more week of camp, we’re here to help families end summer on a high note.”

As families wrap up their summer fun and prepare for the start of a new school year, the YMCA is also reminding the community to take time for health and wellness. That’s why the Y is proud to partner with Who We Play For and Southern New Hampshire Health to offer a free ECG heart screening event for youth ages 10–25 on Monday, August 11, from 4 to 8pm at the Nashua YMCA (24 Stadium Drive).

Just as summer is a season for play and exploration, it’s also an opportunity to protect what matters most—our kids’ health. Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in young athletes, often without any prior symptoms. A simple, painless, five-minute ECG screening can help detect hidden heart conditions before it’s too late. This free event is open to the public, but registration is required. Click to Register

So, while you’re chasing the last sunsets, swimming the last laps, and singing the final camp songs of summer, take a moment to give your child the gift of peace of mind. The YMCA is here to help families stay active, connected, and heart-healthy, all year long.
