Building Brain Health with Fitness and Connection Through Wellness Activities All Year Long

The YMCA of Greater Nashua is highlighting year-round healthy living programs that support mind, body, and spirit in recognition of National Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Walking GroupJune is National Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a time to honor and support the more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and the countless families who support them. The YMCA of Greater Nashua is proud to stand alongside these individuals by offering wellness programs that promote brain health, physical vitality, social connection, and emotional resilience.

“At the Y, we believe that wellness extends far beyond fitness,” said Eirikur Holt, Director of Healthy Living at the Y. “We support the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—because challenges like Alzheimer’s demand a holistic approach. Whether you’re living with memory loss or caring for someone who is, the Y is here to help.”

Through its Healthy Living programs, the YMCA of Greater Nashua provides a range of supportive options that can benefit individuals facing Alzheimer’s and other cognitive challenges:

  • Group Exercise Classes· Moving for Better Balance – A proven, evidence-based exercise program designed to improve strength, balance, and flexibility—all of which are crucial in maintaining independence and mobility.
  • · Group Exercise Classes – Low-impact options such as chair yoga, gentle stretching, and water aerobics provide movement in a safe, encouraging environment while also stimulating mental focus and relieving stress.
  • · Social Engagement Opportunities – Group fitness classes, walking clubs, and wellness events offer participants the chance to connect, socialize, and reduce isolation—a key factor in supporting brain health and emotional well-being.
  • · Community Education – The Y hosts periodic seminars on healthy aging, memory care, and nutrition, equipping caregivers and participants alike with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions.

As scientific research increasingly points to the role of consistent physical activity, strong social ties, and mental stimulation in supporting long-term brain health and slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms, Y programs are designed to make those critical components accessible and sustainable for people of all backgrounds and abilities.
