July is Disability Pride MonthHonoring Inclusion, Identity, and Empowerment

This July, the YMCA of Greater Nashua proudly joins communities nationwide in celebrating Disability Pride Month, honoring the strength, diversity, and contributions of people with disabilities. Disability Pride Month marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—a landmark civil rights law passed on July 26, 1990, that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities.

Disability Pride Month is about visibility, dignity, and acceptance. As The Arc of the United States describes, it’s a time to recognize that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity—something to be acknowledged with pride, not pity.

“At the YMCA of Greater Nashua, we believe everyone deserves a chance to thrive—regardless of ability,” said Liz Kaas, Director of Health and Wellness at the YMCA of Greater Nashua. “We’re proud to offer inclusive, adaptive programs that support individuals with disabilities in developing confidence, building friendships, and discovering joy through movement.”

Programs That EmpowerAdaptive Swim Classes

The YMCA of Greater Nashua offers several adaptive programs tailored to meet the needs of youth and adults with physical, developmental, or cognitive disabilities:

Adaptive Swimming Lessons: In these one-on-one sessions, trained instructors help participants build water safety skills, increase physical fitness, and grow self-esteem in a supportive aquatic environment. For many, it’s not just about swimming—it’s about confidence, independence, and fun.

Adaptive Tennis: In partnership with USTA New England and taught by experienced instructor Dick Lane, this program empowers individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities to learn tennis skills, stay active, and enjoy inclusive play.

Adaptive TennisDisability Pride Is About More Than Access

Disability Pride Month challenges stigma by celebrating identity and advocating for systemic change. It’s not just about ramps or services—it’s about equity, visibility, and valuing each person’s full humanity.

The YMCA encourages everyone to learn more about the disability rights movement and to actively support the creation of inclusive communities where all people can thrive.
