Heart Disease Awareness and Prevention

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, impacting millions of lives each year. It occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked, creating a serious circulation issue. However, early detection and treatment can significantly improve survival rates and help prevent long-term heart damage.

To raise awareness, February is recognized as American Heart Month, a time dedicated to highlighting heart disease and promoting prevention strategies. The YMCA has always been a pillar of community health, offering programs and services to keep individuals active and healthy. At the YMCA of Greater Nashua, we go even further, providing specialized programs like Vital Beats, Diabetes Prevention, and Stroke Education to address specific health needs and enhance well-being.

Vital Beats

Vital Beats is a 10-week cardiopulmonary maintenance program designed for individuals who have completed cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation. This program introduces participants to the YMCA’s offerings in a safe and supportive environment. Each class is supervised by two personal trainers, ensuring participants receive personalized, one-on-one attention.Diabetes Prevention Class - Heart Health

Diabetes Prevention Program

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program empowers participants to lower their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by adopting healthier lifestyles. This year-long program begins with 16 weekly group sessions, followed by 4 bi-weekly sessions, and 6 monthly follow-ups. Led by a certified instructor, the sessions include engaging discussions on topics like healthy eating, stress reduction, and the importance of exercise. Adults 18 years or older who are at risk for Type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with prediabetes are encouraged to join.

Heart Wellness Workshops

As part of our Preventive Health Workshops, the YMCA, in collaboration with local health partners, offers educational sessions focused on Heart Health. These workshops cover a variety of important topics, including Diabetes Awareness, Eating Well for Aging Well, Smoking Cessation, and Stroke Awareness. They provide essential education and early detection tools to help individuals maintain heart health and ensure long-term well-being.
