Lifeguard - Camp Sargent
YMCA of Greater Nashua; Camp Sargent; Seasonal Position
Camp Dates: June 22 – August 28
Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 8:45 AM – 4:30 PM
POSITION SUMMARY:
At the YMCA, lifeguards are more than safety monitors—they are leaders who help create an environment where every camper can achieve, build relationships, and feel a sense of belonging.
Under the direction of the Waterfront Director, the Lifeguard ensures a safe, welcoming, and engaging waterfront experience for all campers, staff, and guests. This role requires vigilance, quick decision-making, and a commitment to prevention, while also building positive connections with youth and modeling YMCA values.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safety & Supervision
- Maintain constant, active supervision of the waterfront using 10×10 scanning standards
- Prevent accidents through proactive engagement and enforcement of safety rules
- Respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies and drills
- Ensure waterfront is never left unattended during operational hours
- Lead safe evacuation procedures during inclement weather or emergencies
- Preparation & Professionalism
- Arrive on time, prepared, and in proper uniform (lifeguard attire required)
- Maintain required equipment at all times (rescue tube, whistle, PPE, etc.)
- Open and close waterfront areas following established procedures
- Complete incident reports and documentation accurately
- Member & Camper Experience
- Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all campers
- Build positive relationships with campers and staff
- Educate campers on water safety in an engaging and supportive way
- Communicate professionally with parents, staff, and participants
- Support campers’ growth in confidence, skills, and comfort in the water
- Teamwork & Flexibility
- Attend all staff trainings and meetings
- Support camp operations during non-waterfront times (e.g., weather closures)
- Step into counselor roles or other duties as needed
- Coordinate shift coverage with supervisor when necessary
- Health & Wellness Support
- Provide basic first aid and respond to common camp health needs (e.g., dehydration, minor injuries)
- Follow all health and safety protocols to prevent illness and injury
WORK EXPECTATIONS:
- This is a seasonal position with full attendance expected
- Limited schedule flexibility due to the nature of camp operations
- Occasional support at non-camp YMCA events may be required

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age: 17 years old
- Experience working with youth in camps, recreation, or childcare preferred
- Current certifications required:
- Lifeguard (YMCA or American Red Cross)
- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer
- First Aid
- Oxygen Administration
- Ability to pass required swim and skills tests
- Reliable transportation
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to:
- Swim 500 yards continuously and tread water for 10 minutes
- Perform water rescues and lift an adult from the water
- Retrieve a person from the bottom of the lake
- Stand and remain alert for extended periods (2+ hours)
- Lift and carry up to 60 lbs
- Move quickly and respond effectively in emergency situations
