Mary & Zayla’s Y Story
When Mary first began her journey to adopt a child and become a parent, she never imagined that her local YMCA would become such an integral part of that journey—supporting both her growth and her daughter’s.
A few years ago, while living in Boston, Mary made the life-changing decision to adopt. As she navigated the process, she recognized key differences between adoption systems in New Hampshire and Massachusetts and chose to relocate. After connecting with the state to begin the process, she was soon presented with photos of children available for adoption. One photo stood out immediately—her future daughter, Zayla.
When the two met, Mary was instantly struck by Zayla’s intelligence, humor, and joy—qualities that shone brightly despite the hardships she had already endured. Not yet five years old, Zayla had spent significant time in the foster care system and faced challenges no child should have to experience.
Soon after welcoming Zayla into her home through foster care, Mary turned to her community for support and resources. Several organizations pointed her toward the YMCA, noting that its programs might be a strong fit for Zayla’s needs. Their first step was simple: spending time together at the pool. Although Mary was familiar with the Y, she quickly discovered that it offered far more than she had ever realized.
Zayla initially enrolled in Camp Sargent, but it soon became clear that the full-day outdoor environment wasn’t the best fit. Senior Director of Programs, Tiffany Joslin worked closely with Mary and Zayla to find a better option within the organization. Together, they identified Little Investigators, a half-day preschool camp program at the Nashua branch.
The difference was immediate. Zayla felt more comfortable, and Mary was deeply appreciative of the staff’s willingness to adapt and meet her daughter where she was. She was also impressed by the wide variety of activities available through the program—opportunities that allowed Zayla to explore interests she might not otherwise have encountered.
From there, Zayla began trying new activities like basketball, swimming, and gymnastics. She joined the Merrimack Y’s Before the Bell program for morning care and later enrolled in Y Academy, the after-school program. Since then, Zayla has truly blossomed—building friendships, forming meaningful connections with staff, and gaining confidence.
“Every person I’ve come in contact with at the Y seems to truly love what they do and genuinely care,” Mary shared. “I’m amazed by the staff and their commitment. The best part of my day is picking Zayla up and seeing what she’s doing in the program.”
Mary also emphasized her appreciation for the trauma-informed care practiced by YMCA staff, noting how essential it has been to Zayla’s success. “Not every place focuses on that,” she said.
And perhaps the most powerful reflection comes from Zayla herself, who simply says: “I finally found a place where I belong.”
