YMCA Commemorates Parkinson’s Awareness Month with Educational Event and Specialized Fitness Programs
In recognition of Parkinson’s Awareness Month this April, the YMCA of Greater Nashua reaffirms its commitment to fostering community, achievement, and belonging for individuals affected by Parkinson’s Disease. Through informative events and specialized fitness programs, the Y is helping individuals build confidence, maintain independence, and create meaningful connections. The Y is pleased to announce an upcoming educational session on LSVT BIG therapy and to highlight its ongoing Pedaling for Parkinson’s program, both designed to enhance the quality of life for those living with Parkinson’s.
Educational Event: Shaking it Up – Living Life Big and Loud with Parkinson’s (LSVT BIG)
On Friday, April 11, from 12 PM to 1 PM, the Nashua YMCA will host Shaking it Up – Living Life Big and Loud with Parkinson’s, led by Ashley Tighe, PT, DPT, with CPTE Physical Therapy. This session will explore specialized therapy designed to help individuals with Parkinson’s recalibrate their movements, improving mobility and restoring confidence in daily activities.
“Raising awareness and providing resources for those affected by Parkinson’s is essential,” said Eirikur Holt, Director of Healthy Living at the YMCA. “And workshops like LSVT BIG, a recurring monthly support group and programs like Moving Better for Balance and Pedaling for Parkinson’s not only help individuals build strength, but also create connections, which reflect the core of the Y’s mission.”
This event is free and open to the community; however, registration is required. To reserve your spot, please visit our program registration portal.
Ongoing Programs Supporting the Parkinson’s Community
Pedaling for Parkinson’s An ongoing Y program, Pedaling for Parkinson’s is more than just an exercise class—it’s a place where participants can push limits, celebrate progress, and build camaraderie among peers in an uplifting environment. Led by specially certified instructors, the group cycling class is designed to improve physical strength, cognitive function, and social well-being for individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
Research indicates that riding a stationary bicycle can reduce Parkinson’s motor symptoms by as much as 35%. Consequently, the class focuses on achieving specific revolutions per minute (RPM), with participants engaging in a structured workout that includes a warm-up, sustained cycling at 80 to 90 RPM, and a cool-down.
Pedaling for Parkinson’s is now available at two YMCA of Greater Nashua’s branches: • Nashua YMCA: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-2 PM • Merrimack YMCA: Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 AM – 12 PM
YMCA Director of Wellness Liz Kaas fosters a welcoming and supportive Pedaling for Parkinson’s class environment where participants encourage one another, build lasting relationships, and strengthen their sense of belonging within the Y community. Liz’s passion for wellness and her commitment to creating a supportive space have made the program a transformative experience for many, helping individuals not only improve their physical health but also find a renewed sense of purpose and connection at the Y.
Moving for Better Balance In addition to Pedaling for Parkinson’s, the YMCA of Greater Nashua also offers Moving for Better Balance, a 12-week exercise program developed by the Oregon Research Institute. Based on the principles of Tai Chi, this program is specifically designed to improve balance and prevent falls—an essential component of well-being for those with Parkinson’s and others who are at risk of falling. The class is led by a qualified instructor who teaches eight movements modified especially for fall prevention, offering participants a gentle yet effective approach to maintaining stability and confidence.
The current 12-week session began April 1 and is taking place at the Nashua YMCA. Interested individuals are encouraged to reach out for more information or to inquire about future sessions.
