YMCA of Greater Nashua Observes Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, Embracing Inclusivity for All

In recognition of Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month this April, the YMCA of Greater Nashua is proud to celebrate its commitment to providing an inclusive environment where individuals of all abilities can achieve, belong, and build meaningful relationships.

Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, championed by organizations like Less Leg More Heart, aims to educate the public about the experiences of those living with limb loss and limb differences. This annual campaign highlights the importance of equitable medical access, care, and coverage for the over 5.6 million people in the U.S. affected by limb loss or limb difference.

Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Tina Hurley“As part of its commitment to awareness and education, the YMCA of Greater Nashua is proud to partner with longtime volunteer Christina Hurley, a passionate advocate for the limb loss community. On Wednesday, April 23, Christina will host informative events at both the Merrimack Y and Nashua Y, providing resources and conversations around Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness.

Limb loss and limb difference awareness month shines of vital light on a community often overlooked, yet full of strength, resilience, and potential,” says Christina Hurley, YMCA member and volunteer. “As someone directly impacted, I know how critical it is to feel seen, supported, and included. By raising awareness, we open doors to better mobility, mental health, community connection, and available funding for those in need. The YMCA’s dedication to inclusive spaces helps empower individuals with limb loss to live fuller, more active lives.”

Recent legislative efforts in New Hampshire reflect progress toward supporting individuals with limb loss. In 2024, Senate Bill 177 was enacted, requiring health insurance policies to cover prosthetic devices, including activity-specific devices, for children under 19 years of age. Building upon this, Senate Bill 132 has been introduced in 2025 to expand coverage, mandating that health insurance policies provide coverage for adult prosthetics, including activity-specific prosthetic devices. This bill is currently pending further legislative action.

The YMCA offers a variety of programs tailored to meet diverse needs, including adaptive sports, wellness initiatives, and community events that encourage participation from all members. By prioritizing inclusivity, the YMCA strives to create a welcoming space where individuals with limb loss or limb differences can thrive alongside their peers.
