Happy and Smiling About Getting His Steps in Back at the YMCA

My Y Story: Marty Vowels

Marty Vowels, YMCA of Greater NashuaMARTY VOWELS: HAPPY AND SMILING ABOUT GETTING HIS STEPS IN BACK AT THE YMCA

YMCA Welcome Center staff are ready for a hearty ‘hello’ and a big smile when Marty Vowels enters the Y. “I spend two-and-a-half hours at the Y daily. Before the pandemic, I would normally walk 7,500 steps on the track and 7,500 steps on the treadmill!,” he shares. Marty is a big fan of the elliptical stepper. “It’s what I do now. I’ve been having some balance issues, so I don’t go on the track anymore.”

Marty missed the Y when we had to close for a couple of months last year due to the pandemic. “When the Y opened back up, I was impressed with the way the staff opened the building. Everything feels safe.  The equipment is clean. The track is clean. And the social-distancing  regulations of being 6 feet apart, and everyone wearing masks, they enforce it. If I didn’t have the Y, I’d go nuts! I was going six days a week at one time.”

Marty joined the Y when the new building opened up in Nashua in 2011. He started by walking on the track, then moved to the treadmill. Now he enjoys the elliptical stepper.

Marty’s wife Judith has also been a Y member. She took classes and especially enjoyed P.A.W.S. classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. (This is Power Arm Walking & Strengthening – PAWS, where participants did varied types of arm movements using their body weight while walking and strengthening their upper and lower body.)

Marty shares that he would highly recommend the Y to anybody. I’ve made a lot of friends, and I like that part of going there. We have social time after working out!”
